Time is our most precious resource. It is not renewable, you cannot buy more of it, no one can give you more, and you never know how much you have left. In the modern world, our time is all the more precious because of all the people who need it. The person needs your time the most is you. Self-care is desperately important, and the foundations of good self-care are good sleep, good nutrition, exercise, and intellectual engagement. A healthy mind and body are the job of a lifetime, and for most of us, it doesn’t just happen.

Changing Habits
It’s easy to get into a wearing routine with work and family demands, to give away all of your time and have little left for yourself. Start with scheduling a full night of sleep – difficult for parents of young children – and work out from there what else you can fit into your day and outsource the most disliked and time-consuming tasks. In fact, the National Academy of Sciences (US) notes that people who spend money to outsource tasks are happier and more satisfied with their lives. This can include housecleaning, buying groceries, or taking a taxi instead of driving. Anyone who has had to deal with the traffic in Victoria BC can attest to the value of saving time on the daily runaround.

Reclaim It
You might not think that trimming 10 minutes here in 20 minutes there adds up to significant time. However, taken over the course of a week or month you would be entirely surprised how much simply having your groceries delivered to your door can save you. It’s not just the time you spend in the store, but the time you spend getting there, parking, shopping, and driving back. Change your life for the better, and use your time wisely.
